Quick to Answer
I always wanted to be one of those people that had a quick answer. My hand was never the first one up in a crowd. It was not unusual for me to come up with an answer long after the question had been asked. I just don't think quick on my feet.
The other afternoon I was standing in my kitchen, feeling a little tired, sniffling and coughing from the cold I've had, and wondering if I could squeeze in a nap. That's when a question came to my mind, "Aren't you tired of working at this Christian stuff?" My intelligent self answered, "Huh? Where did that come from?" So much for the quick answer. [A quick note: I realize that "NO!" would have been enough of an answer, but stick with me as I ponder.]
The next few days of reading and Bible study gave me the answer I wish I had had at the time ... And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? - Luke 6:46. Oh, I'll have days of feeling tired, being sick, hoping for some rest, and such, but that doesn't mean I should tire and want to abandon the work the Lord has asked of me. He is my Lord, Adonai, and I want to do the things which He has said!
In her Bible study, Lord, I Want to Know You, Kay Arthur writes ...
But does what I do matter as long as I acknowledge Him as Lord and tell Him I want His free gift of eternal life? Yes, it does!
Lord is more than a word; it indicates a relationship. The lordship of God means His total possession of me and my total submission to Him as Lord and Master.
Mrs. Arthur continues on ...
With submission comes all we need for the task He puts before us. Whatever it is, as Adonai He supplies what His servants need in order to perform their Master's will.
I was rereading a wonderful book by Keith Green called A Cry in the Wilderness when I came to the chapter called "Proclaim Him Lord". Mr. Green wrote ...
[B]efore we look at how we make Jesus Lord, we need to see what it is we mean when we talk about lordship. To make Jesus Lord of our life means to surrender control of every area of our life to Him. We come under His authority. His authority is supreme over our authority. We start taking orders from Himwe do what what He tells us to do. That's what lordship isChrist reigning as supreme authority over our life.
Making Jesus Lord of our life is not something passive. It's not a state of being, it's a state of doing. Those whom Jesus recognizes as His own are those who do the will of His Father in heaven.
I missed the chance to have that quick answer, but I do know the answer and I will do as Jesus my Lord said, "Not everyone who says to me, `Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven." - Matthew 7:21. And if that question is ever put to me again I can quickly answer, "No! I'm not tired of working at this Christian stuff and let me tell me you why!"
Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed. - John 6:27
If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour. - John 12:26
But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. - James 1:22
Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. - Romans 6:16-17
His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. - Matthew 25:21
